Hurt badly in the 1930 Indianapolis 500, losing his left ear, with brother Paul killed in the same crash. His brother had no racing experience but wanted to help and raise some funds to support his children but it ended tragically. Despite this, Marshall carried on racing until in he was in his 50's and then became a mechanic. Cy ran his garage near the Speedway for some time and initially started as a relief driver. Marshall raced on dirt tracks mostly in Indiana before 1930, but by the time he returned to race again he had moved to Jacksonville in Florida.
