Full name Nicolaus, he was a sometime sprint driver in the Missouri area. His attempt to qualify at Indianapolis in 1925 was the highest profile event Eckerle tackled. Eckerle lived in St. Louis all his life and later served the city as a maintenance supervisor for their public services. He also drove city buses for a while. Eckerle built his own car for the '500, making sure a number of parts were sourced locally from his home city. Eckerle was of German ancestry.
