An aviator in his youth, he later became an army aviation instructor, and then raced on for over 20 years, before later becoming a car owner and builder, most notably for Ted Horn, who rated Lewis highly. Lewis designed and built a specifically custom-made sprint car for Horn. A qualified metalworker, Lewis built cars both pre and post-World War 2. Lewis, as a racer, was best at dirt track racing. Lewis also built a car for the inventor (and sometime racer) Thomas Noah Smith, a man who was a key developer in the rotary valve system, but Smith only raced it the once before ending his short career.
