Killed in a crash in his last ever race, after which he planned to run the family farm. A sprint car ace, being especially strong on dirt tracks, Gus died later in hospital. Schrader served in the US Army during World War 1, and then started racing in 1917. From a farming background, money to race had to be earnt, but he saved his winnings and then eventually bought a Miller special, which transformed his career and led him to the success that saw him become of the initial inductees in the US National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1990. Schrader was often seen racing in a white shirt and a black bow tie!
