AAA driver between 1922-1933, with a number of Indianapolis attempts. Retired after a big crash during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. Gardner primarily raced either on dirt ovals or board ovals. A regular in the big car races in 1930 and 1931, Gardner's best result was a 5th place finish at Altoona in June 1930, a track that he had a lot of good finishes at, but his best performance was probably that of his first Indianapolis 500 start in 1929; despite qualifying way down the pack, he finished an impressive sixth.
