Superb road racer of the 1930's, one of Sicily's best pre-war drivers. Also raced in big events in Europe and America, the latter during his 1930 sojourn. His father died when Letterio was very young and his mother re-married Antonio Piccolo, which is why Letterio is often registered as Piccolo Cucinotta. 3 stepbrothers also became racing drivers - Mario, Carmelo and Giuseppe Piccolo. Letterio worked in the family textile business, then made good friends with Opera composer Giacomo Puccini and learned to drive from his chauffeur. He resumed racing after WWII with a Lancia Aurelia and then a Maserati A6GCS sports car, his last race being the 1956 Targa Florio. His son, Salvatore, also raced and won his class in the 1974 Targa Florio.
