A former P-38 fighter and test pilot, who fought in World War Two, Crawford was the son of a grocery store owner, who took over from his father and later expanded the business to make it a multi-million dollar franchise of supermarkets across California and Mexico. This was Ray's first priority; racing was a past-time for him. That said, he enjoyed a long and varied career, racing in midget cars, hillclimbing, sportscars, road racing and the Indianapolis 500. Crawford even raced hydroplanes for a while.
