One of the few living drivers that survived over 50 years on from the very first World Championship GP until his recent death, Eugene was involved for some while as a technical director for Salmson. He lived in La Rochelle and had occasional links to the sport through magazine interviews or the odd visit to a historic event. A qualified engineer, Eugene was extremely good in voiturette events immediately after World War 2 as well as winning a Formula 2 race at Aix-en-Bains in 1949. Eugene then became a driver for Lago-Talbot but his career ground to a virtual halt after a big crash at the 1950 Swiss Grand Prix left him seriously injured. After another big crash in 1954, he retired from racing.
