After retiring from F1 racing, he competed in sportscars, touring cars, ice racing and rallycross as well as developing and testing Ligier's F1 cars. He also had business interests as well as running a kart track near his home in Paris. Jean-Pierre was a Grand Prix motorcyclist before switching to four wheels and he achieved most of his success despite an accident which left him with severely restricted movement in his arm in 1964.
