Decent and very modest driver, especially in Japan, where he won a string of races in sportscars, F2000, and Japanese F2, in which he became 1979 champion, and was three-times runner up. He remained a strong contender for wins until his retirement in 1992. Died in 2015, after battling a long illness, cirrhosis of the liver. Until his illness worsened, he visited a number of events in Japan, both current and historic. Matsumoto also worked as a driver coach after his racing retirement, including to Shinji Nakano.
