A dapper, distinctive driver of the old school, 'Phi Phi' was often easy to spot because he often drove with his cap backwards, and hated wearing crash helmets. A farmer and wool merchant, the money he made from these industries meant he could attempt motor racing. He started in 1926 in hill-climbs, before becoming one of the top independent drivers in Grand Prix racing in the 1930's. Finally retired in 1952.
