French-born, but longtime Moroccan citizen who lived near Casablanca for a long while, but died in France. However his closeness to Morocco was shown by his funeral and burial being in Marrakech. Raced a lot in North Africa, often in rallies. He later became an organiser of the Rallye Maroc. His local prowess in rallies led to him getting a deal for the GP with a debutant team-manager, Ken Tyrrell. He also ran a garage and youth sports association in Marrakech. and somewhat bizarrely for this largely sunny country, he was also a national ski-ing champion! La Caze was also the grandson of the man chiefly responsible for the Suez Canal, diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps. At his death, aged 98, he was the oldest living driver who appeared in a Grand Prix. La Caze was also awarded the Legion d'honneur.
