Recently retired from running his haulage business in France, having handed it on to his sons. Jean, whose name is often credited the wrong way round due to a entry list error, began in the sport in rallying in 1964. He swiftly moved to circuit racing, winning the 1968 Criterium de Formula France series before also taking up sportscar racing. A sponsorship deal led to a pack of F2 races and a Grand Prix appearance but it wasn't enough to sustain a longer career at the top, so Max continued in Formula 2 and Formula 3 until the end of the 1972 season, at which stage Max then concentrated on his business.
