Ocon has been part of Mercedes' young driver programme for some time. He started karting when he was nine, before moving to Formula Renault aged just fifteen. He progressed quickly and comprehensively won the 2014 European Formula 3 series, beating Max Verstappen, no less. From 2014 onwards, Ocon was been part of a programme to reach F1, either by Renault test-driving duties or his spell in DTM with Mercedes. Esteban also won the GP3 series in 2015 and all of this culminated in him making his Formula 1 debut in 2016 with Manor. In 2017, Ocon moved to Force India where he remained until 2018. He became Mercedes' official reserve driver in 2019 and this led to him returning to Formula 1 in 2020 with Renault. He remained there, in their Alpine guise in 2021 and took his first win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He remained at Alpine until 2024, joining Haas in 2025.
