Died of cancer and pulmonary fibrosis. He worked as a farmer in his homeland, which he took up after a crash in 1965, which sadly killed a small boy. He survived a plane crash in 1966, albeit with burns that would scar him for life, as he saved a number of people that day although his farm manager died in the crash. Until ill-health, he attended a number of historic festivals and ran a nature reserve. Maggs raced from 1958 onwards in his homeland before moving to Europe just one year later. He was a star in Formula Junior in Ken Tyrrell's Cooper-T56 in 1961 and this led to him making his Grand Prix debut later that year, the first South African to appear in the World Championship.
