A very popular man, he was a regular at historics and worked for many years for Wynn Oil. Jackie later also performed stunt driving, but had to give this up when he was badly injured after being hit by a stunt car. Sadly, robbers broke into his house twice - the first time the attack killed his wife and injured Jackie. Despite this, he still attended historic events and stayed upbeat, but when the 2nd attack happened, Jackie was badly injured, and after a spell in a coma, he died, leaving the whole South African motor racing world aghast and in mourning over his murder. Retired from racing in 1973 having started his motorsport career in 1956, initially as a mechanic for Doug Serrurier. His career nearly finished swiftly afterwards when, given a reward for his work as a mechanic, he crashed the car after a screw came loose on the steering column and was left with a limp for the rest of his life.
