Mainly a dirt-track racer, he had a long career, racing both well before and well after World War Two. He began racing in 1938 in dirt-oval events before becoming an AAA regular immediately after the Second World War. He came fifth three times in these events; twice in 1946 at Goshen and Milwaukee and then once in 1947 at Springfield, Ohio. He often raced a Jewell Special car, built by his friend Lawrence Jewell. He served in the US Navy during World War Two and later became an university professor. Rogers first paid work, however, was actually that of a theatre usher.
