Killed in the warm-up session for the Formula 2 race at Zandvoort, dying of head injuries when he crashed into a metal pole. Primarily a sportscar driver in his career, Burger started his career in 1976 and in 1977 progressed to the Renault 5 Cup. He impressed in both his national and the European series which earnt him a crack at Formula 3. In 1978, he came second in the German Formula 3 championship but also raced Procars, Interserie and the long-distance endurance events like Le Mans.
