Ran a TV and electrical shop in Indianapolis after racing. Holmes lived near the Indianapolis Speedway as a boy, which fired his enthusiasm for the sport. He served briefly in the US Navy during World War 2, and once hostilities finished, he began midget racing - in Indiana during the summer, and Florida during the winter.
