Killed in a midget crash when he was part of a pile-up of cars caused by a slowing car. Best known as a sprint car driver, a 1961 crash left him with only one good arm. Started his career on motorcycles. Brooks, whose given name was actually Bernard, moved to the US in 1922 but appears not to have taken up citizenship. Bert's first four wheel race was in midgets in 1947. Between 1956 and 1958, Bert won and then retained the United Racing Club Sprint Car Championship. A long-time resident of Connecticut, Bert was buried in Newington, near the family home.
