Raced as a lawyer, as he ran a law firm in Bloomfield Hills, but is now retired. MacDonald, only took up racing in his early thirties, competing initially in US SCCA Super Vee, winning at Road Atlanta in 1974 in his Lynx-Volkswagen, before then competing in the European version of the category. He returned to the US, racing again in Super Vee and took another win in 1978. He then attempted the Indianapolis 500 twice before appearing in a smattering of events, with a best finish of 12th place in the rain-hit USAC race at Pocono Raceway in 1981. MacDonald also competed in Formula Atlantic briefly. Often listed as American, MacDonald was actually born and raised in Canada.
