Jim's main work was as a longtime airline pilot, with drives coming as and when they were possible. He moved to Denver to take up a airline pilot position and initially worked for Cessna as a sales rep. He then graduated to becoming an airline pilot, most notably with Continental Airlines. He also built the majority of the houses he lived in over the years. Although flying was his first love, he was involved in racing for many years and also worked as a mentor for younger racing drivers. He retired in 2001 from racing and then became chief pilot and flight department manager for a group of 5 corporations, flying 2 corporate aircraft. He flew in his spare time, despite being in his 70's. In 2018, he received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, and then soon afterwards stopped flying. A scholarship for young pilots is being set up in his memory after Jim sadly passed away in 2020. In 2010, he gave OldRacingCars.com an in-depth interview about his racing and non-racing careers, which can be found at the link below.
