Orphaned at birth, he grew up in a number of children's homes, before joining the US Army, where he served until 1950. He initially worked for the Ford Motor Company as a test driver, starting his racing career by building his own car one year later. A regular in sprint, midget and roadster cars, Duman then moved into more Champ Car events in the 1960's, despite being badly hurt in the 1964 crash and fire that killed Dave MacDonald and Eddie Sachs.
