Mayes also raced midget cars and appeared briefly in NASCAR. His Indianapolis 500 attempt appears the only type of effort at that particular level of single-seater racing. He entered a Kurtis 2000-Offenhauser powered car, but failed to qualify. Mayes ended up having nine children, and his real name was James Buford Maines.
