Sometimes listed as Red Roberts. Mainly a relief driver or racing mechanic; certainly his two Indianapolis appearances came as a relief driver; in 1929, he drove one hundred and ten laps as relief for Billy Arnold and in 1930 he drove a lot less; thirteen laps relieving Pete DePaolo in the Duesenberg. Roberts mainly raced on dirt tracks. Often listed as coming from Danville, Roberts was actually born in the parish just outside the town. Roberts ran his own garage in Westville, Illinois for decades. His father, John, was born in England and moved over in the 1880's.
