Later managed and promoted the AAA National Championship races at Syracuse for many years, hence a few roads in the area are now renamed in his memory. Also a noted motorcycle racer. Vail started as a motorcyclist in 1911, before becoming a leading figure in the barnstorming era of the sport. Vail was a shrewd businessman, becoming one of the few drivers of his era to sign a deal with an accessory firm to promote their products. Vail was a very quick, consistent driver who remained in the sport until the late 1960's, some 50 years after starting as a motorcyclist.
