Raced on for years, but retired on the spot in 1980, to enjoy his second love, surfing and moved to Costa Rica for some while, thoroughly enjoying life. Sadly died in 1995, aged only 59, from cancer. A somewhat private man who enjoyed to be active, Rick began racing in amateur sportscar races in the early 1960's in a Porsche 1600, Lotus 23B and a Lola T70. In 1964, he won the SCCA F. Modified title. Muther became an accomplished sportscar driver, but also raced in sprint cars. Not one to suffer fools gladly, Muther, although he loved racing, had enough of the sport and just decided to move on after failing to qualify for the '500 in 1980 as he wanted to enjoy more of life in general.
