The first man to lap at an average of over 200mph in a sanctioned event (in qualifying in 1972 at the Ontario Motor Speedway), Jerry later worked as the racing representative for Champion Spark Plugs and then the Prolong oil conditioner firm. In recent years, he was a regular attendee at historic events. Jerry came close to winning the 1972 Indianapolis 500 and was a regular sports car driver, partnering friend Dan Gurney, during a career that lasted thirty-two years from its commencement in 1961. Grant died of liver failure and diabetes in 2012.
