Later became a mechanic after his successful driving career ended. Mainly based in the US, he founde, built and later ran the speedway track in South Bend. Of both Belgian and Dutch ancestry, Charlie began his working life working on a beet farm in Ohio, before the family settle in Indiana. Charlie started racing in 1936 and after World War Two became a regular in midget racing. Charlie then did some racing in Indycar events (taking a notable win at Milwaukee in 1947) before retiring in 1950 and continued his roles as mechanic and both running and promoting the South Bend Speedway
