Killed in qualifying for a midget race. AAA Pacific Champion in 1939, he was one of the USA's best drivers at his death. Very good in big cars, roadsters and midgets. Swanson was of both Swedish and Irish ancestry and due to his fame and charisma was one of the few drivers at the time to link up with advertising; he was in adverts nationwide promoting Camel cigarettes. His widow, Lilian, had previously been married to another racing driver that died; Ernie Triplett, who died six years previously. Swanson largely raced on the West Coast and as well as the aforementioned title in 1939, he also won the NMA Midget title in 1935.
