Initially an auto tester, he joined the Interstate Auto Company and met up with Harry Endicott, who also worked there - the Indy 500 attempt coming about through this meeting. After Endicott's death, Madden more or less packed racing in but continued to be busy, working for Ames Auto Company in Kentucky and then later moved to Flint, Michigan as a service manager. He then went on to work as a maintenance supervisor for a beach erosion project until his death from heart failure.
