One of the more obscurer entrants for the Indianapolis 500, Melaun was an automobile mechanic, based in Illinois at the time of appearing at Indianapolis, by trade. Of Austrian ancestry, he also turned up at another race in 1914, in Galveston, but didn't drive the car in the event in the end. After World War One, he settled in Texas, where he died at the early age of 37 in 1922.
