Automobile and aircraft engineer who founded Continental Cars, working as chief designer, before this morphed into Connaught. Later kept up links with the aircraft industry. Clarke died after a short illness. Clarke was a good friend of Ken McAlpine who helped the latter into the sport, but then developed the team into a successful sportscar and single-seater outfit. Despite a win for Tony Brooks in Syracuse in 1955 in a Connaught, further funding and support was not forthcoming and Clarke decided to leave the sport at the end of the decade. He then worked in property and land ownership and also worked in the motor car retail trade.
