Came from the maritime industry, and was with BAR/Honda for some years as a technical director. However, in 2006, after initally being demoted, he left the team half-way through the season. Returned to the sport in 2007 as a technical director for Red Bull, but was sacked in 2009. Was back in the sport with HRT as technical director after joining them initially as a technical consultant, but left them in 2011 to join Mercedes F1 as a technology director. In 2022, he returned to the maritime industry as technical director of the INEOS Britannia sailing team, to focus on their attempts to win the America's Cup.
