Born: |
03 Apr 1950 |
Nationality: |
Great Britain |
Teams: | Arrows, Hesketh, Ligier, Lotus, Williams (1977-1997) |
Left F1 to join Lola as their technical director, but it was not a long departure as he returned to Williams, as their track engineer and special projects head. Left Williams at the start of 2007 and then was with Toyota as a technical adviser and with a few Formula 3 teams as an independent consultant. He is now retired from designing but works as a scrutineer in historic racing. He was also a scrutineer for powerboats. An intelligent, upbeat fellow who is passionate about the sport, Dernie's knowledge of aerodynamics led to great success for the Williams FW08 car. Frank's greatest success came with Williams, which involved active suspension development and advances with their wind tunnel, but he had other enjoyable moments with Ligier and Benetton.
