Was with Toyota until 2005, after years in Formula 1 with a range of teams. His career afterwards has been stalled by a dispute with his old team, which was finally resolved in Gustav's favour in 2007, to allow him to move on into other projects. Now is largely retired but sometimes is on hand as an independent consultant and now lives in Italy. Brunner trained as a mechanical engineer before becoming a designer, initially in Formula 2 and sportscars and then in Grand Prix racing.
