A popular, genial, fun-loving man, but as political and gritty a driver as anyone, Gerhard, once retiring from driving, was heavily involved with Williams as BMW Head of Motor Sport, but he stepped down from this role in 2003. After a spell relaxing and pursuing business interests in Austria, he came back in Formula 1 as a successful co-owner of Toro Rosso. For a while, he went back to his business interests (which includes the Berger family logistics firm) and relaxing, although for nearly 5 years, he was also the FIA's Single Seater Commission head, until stopping in 2014. However, in 2017, Berger became chairman of the ITR, which is the organisation behind the running of the DTM. Berger more recently has started driving and appearing at a number of historic festivals.
