Ran the Lyncar engineering firm for many years after the Formula 1 attempt. Slater, whose first name was actually Harold, also worked as a design engineer for Lola, March, Brabham and McLaren but also designed Formula Junior cars. Through Lyncar, Martin also worked on sportscars and the movie industry (including working on the films Star Wars and View to a Kill), but he initially got into racing as a driver, competing in Formula Junior and Formula 3. Slater was based in Berkshire for many years but later moved the business to Llandeilo, in Carmarthenshire, Wales, where he ran his engineering consultancy for some time and continued to tinker with cars until his death in 2021.
