Recently replaced as boss of McLaren's Formula 1 team, after years with the team. He had also previously been CEO and MD of the team/company and was also the chairman of FOTA. After a period of enforced gardening leave, he left the sport to join Sir Ben Ainslie's sailing team, BAR as chief executive, with the overall aim to become the first British team to win the America's Cup. Between those roles, he joined his daughter, an anthropologist, in Borneo, Rwanda and Uganda, as she specialises working with orangutans. Whitmarsh returned to the sport in 2018 as one of the advisory members of Formula E's global advisory board to help Formula E's rules and future and now also has a role as a consultant to the FIA. In 2019, he became chair of the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP), launched by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC). In 2021, he returned to Formula 1 as the group CEO of Aston Martin, a role he continued until 2024. He is now back in the sailing and shipping industry.
