Engine and chassis designer and developer who worked with John Judd to produce the neat Judd F1 engine, but also worked on engines for CART and F3000. Jakeman initially worked on both current and vintage aeroplanes and was one of many motor sport engineers to have worked at the DeHavilland aerospace factory in Hatfield as a student, where he designed aeroplanes. His passion for aeroplanes came from his father, Maurice Harry Compton Jakeman, who was a salesman pre-war, moving from Berkshire to Essex, where he served in World War 2 with the Essex Regiment before becoming a flight lieutenant and pilot.
