Still runs Engine Development Ltds, his engine manufacturing business. He started in the sport with Coventry, after serving an apprenticeship after leaving school, and their Coventry-Climax engine. Then then went to Repco with Phil Irving and Jack Brabham after the latter was impressed with his work. Judd was pivotal to Repco and Brabham's success, and when Brabham later took up the Cosworth DFV, Brabham again hired Judd to develop the engine for him. Once Brabham was bought out, Jack and John formed Engine Developments, which developed Cosworth engines for a whole range of teams in Formula 1, Formula 2 and CART. In 1988, Judd ran his own-named engines with WIlliams, Ligier, Scuderia Italia and March, and then in partnership with Yamaha, until 1997. The engines were neat, but major success was not forthcoming. In more recent years, Engine Developments and Judd have concentrated on sportscars.
