Now works as a racing driver instructor at the Misano circuit. However, as part of his instructing experience and to keep in touch with younger races, he drove in the Italian Mini Challenge from 2012 to 2016. After a little time away, he returned to the series from 2023 onwards. Gianluca started karting in 1990 in Rome and did well regionally the following year. In 1992, he started racing around Europe, which he continued until progressing to cars in 1996, appearing in the Italian Formula Renault series. Gianluca won the 1997 national class of Italian Formula 3 before progressing to the main series and then Italian Formula 3000 before his brief move to International Formula 3000 in 2001. Calcagni started race instructing the following year, staying away from the driving side until 2012, when he took up racing in Mini's. Gianluca is also more involved in the motorsport administration and event management side these days as well as safe driving programmes and has his own driving school.
