Was retired after a long racing career, mostly spent in touring cars, where he won the Italian series title in 2006 and 2009, to add to the Swedish Touring Car title won in 2001 and 2002. Now mainly works as a racing instructor, but in 2016, returned to racing, in touring cars again, in his homeland. It proved a great success as he won the TCR Italian Championship. He remained in the discipline in 2017 but has now retired again after reaching his 50th year. But Roberto also was a longtime driver in Italian Formula 3, winning the title there in 1990, beating Alex Zanardi, having started in the series in 1987 after a brief spell in Formula Panda. Roberto moved into touring cars in 1995 and remained in the discipline for the rest of his career.
