A former karter, Giovanni moved up the ranks into the Formula Opel series, racing in many different strains of the discipline and doing an effective job. This earnt him a crack at Formula 3000, where he stayed a couple of years before switching to the European F3000 series, but has not raced since leaving the category in 2001. Montanari has, however, appeared at a few of the annual memorial events for Alfredo Melandri, in honour of his friend who was killed in a Formula 3 test in 1998.
