After Formula 3000, Mario switched to Champ Cars in 2003 and 2004 but after a spell in Grand-Am, he stopped full-time racing and became a consultant and team owner in the US Formula BMW series, focusing on getting Brazillians into US feeder racing. After a brief return to racing, he kept links via karts, but is now concentrating on building and developing a game park and safari lodge in Brazil, with a particular focus on a jaguar preservation within the park. Mario is also a keen photographer in his spare time. Haberfeld made a surprise but welcome return to racing in 2019, competing in one round of the Jaguar (no real surprise there!) I-Pace Trophy.
