After suffering grave injuries in the 1990 Spanish GP practice, he retired and became involved with the sport in junior single-seater formulae, running many successful teams. Then he worked with Comtec as a driver development coach and manager. Still raced occasionally, mostly in UK endurance events or historics, and in 2014, started racing with son Stefan. However, Martin's main role is as chief driving instructor for the Lotus Driver's Academy and dovetailed this job with his FIA driving steward role on occasion. He runs his own driver academy and does a lot of public speaking too. Despite this, in 2015, he made a surprise racing appearance in the British Touring Car Championship. In 2019, he announced that he is now running a Ginetta Junior series which supports the British Touring Car Series. However the same year saw Martin suffer a bad moped crash when on a charity event in Ireland which saw him damage the same leg so badly hurt at Jerez some thirty years earlier. A long recovery from this is now the focus for Martin. Martin is also the Goodwood guardian of driving standards at the Members’ Meeting and Revival.
