Russell had long since retired from the sport and was involved in the family construction business. However in 2011, he was jailed for 13 months for his involvement and assistance in a multi-million pound car fraud conspiracy in Yorkshire. Since his release from prison, he has kept a low profile, but is involved in business projects again, but in different industries. Spence was a talented driver who battled against a lack of funds for much of his career, but he still won the 1983 European FF2000 series, came 3rd in the 1984 and 1985 British F3 championship. Later race in America, sportscars and the BTCC. He started in hill climb events at Harewood in a Mini Cooper, before going to the Jim Russell racing school as a 21st birthday present and thereafter doing well in Formula Ford.
