Shelton was a long-time Formula Atlantic stalwart, who holds the record for most poles in the category; fourteen in total. He was 1988 North American Formula Atlantic 's Atlantic Division Champion. Shelton's day job though was running the Shelton Ferrari automobile concern in Florida, which he ran with brother Tim who also raced, as well as flying planes. Steve initially worked as an office manager for an advertising firm before the brothers set up their dealership in 1982 in their hometown. They then expanded to Naples and Fort Myers as they covered more of the State. They have sold the Ferrari dealerships now but still run a Land Rover dealership and devote time to local charities.
