Bruce was best remembered as a NASCAR driver, and won the Rookie of the Year title in 1975. He appeared in over a hundred events over eight years, starting by buying a car from NASCAR legend Bobby Allison. However, he never really built on his initial promise and retired from racing in 1987. He then became a PR and sales rep for a carburettor firm. He then moved back in Kansas, initially owning and operating hotels in Great Bend and Goodwin, but then raised quarter-horses at his home in Topeka. In 2016, he returned to a NASCAR event for the first time since he retired, as a special guest at the Kansas Speedway. Sadly, one year later, he died after complications from esophageal cancer.
