Former motorcyclist. He now lives in Seeley Lake, Montana and has a number of business interests, including his own construction firm, which has specialised in providing construction equipment for any job in both Montana and Arizona, which includes excavators, snow removal equipment, generators, cranes, forklifts, trucks and so on. Richards also competed in the 1983 and 1984 Formula Super Vee Championship, as well as the West Coast Formula Atlantic series in 1985 (finishing 4th in the series driving for Pierre Phillips, father of fellow CART driver Tom), before his move up to CART in 1987.
